MALQUERIDAS

Tana Gilbert

04.10 - 18:00 | 05.10 - 20:00

SYNOPSIS

They are women. They are mothers. They are prisoners serving long sentences in a correctional facility in Chile. Their children grow up far from them, but remain in their hearts. In prison, they find affection in other partners
who share their situation. Mutual support among these women becomes a form of resistance and empowerment.

Opera prima. With the presence of the director.

Why must you see it?

Mobile phones are not permitted in Chilean prisons, yet some images manage to make it out.
These furtive and fragile images come to life in Malqueridas as filmmaker Tana Gilbert alters them, giving them new materiality and rescuing them from obscurity. Karina’s voice brings new significance to the detainees’ personal stories as she rewrites their declinations of maternity, violence, and love. A collaborative narrative that reimagines the jail experience via a fundamentally political view.
