MALLORCA 1-5.10.2024
Today, stopping, doing nothing, makes us feel uneasy. Exposed to the elements, we seek answers in the constant babbling, the small screen, and rarely in silence. It is one of the paradoxes of our time: constant movement, our flight has become our refuge.
Once again we look at how reality and film mediates between the other and ourselves. Five days to watch (ourselves) and listen (to ourselves); to feel and react; to enjoy meetings and reencounters.
Editing and writing will enjoy the spotlight for this fifth edition, as will projects undergoing development, which can benefit from a safe space where they can be shared and grow.
The programme takes us to all corners of Europe: from north to south, east to west, and includes our neighbours, Africa and Latin America. Documentaries that highlight the value in the small stuff, the things that go unnoticed, raising questions over identity, contemporary art, violence, ephemerality or loneliness. They help us to change, transformed by people or territories; they take us to war, to people’s homes or the unknown, although always in the company of their creators.
Miguel Eek, Artistic Director of MajorDocs
MajorDocs is the international creative documentary film festival in Mallorca; a space to discover other realities and other perspectives through carefully selected creative documentaries.
In a time defined by the sheer excess of content, MajorDocs proposes a slow experience: a journey through eight films, each with a deep author’s gaze, that encourage us to stop, step away from our daily lives and connect with not just the other, but also with our own sensibility.
Five days to reflect, ask and discuss each film with its author in an intimate and close setting, without lecterns or pedestals. Each screening will be a unique event without counterprogramming since it is our goal to take care of each film and each author.
During the festival, renowned filmmakers and new talents will share their experiences with the public. An event that will stimulate the critical eye through screenings and talks, as well as workshops and discussions on documentary cinema.
An unmissable date for anyone who enjoys looking without limits, discovering the unknown and stirring their heart.
MajorDocs goes out and looks for a creative documentary…
Hybrid, innovative, transgressive, adventurous.
Able to transcend the present and keep questioning ourselves in the future.
Useless – in which art prevails over functionality.
That digs deeply into the ins and outs of a complex world without staying on the surface.
That leaves a mark on the audience and is able to short-circuit the passive spectator.
In which the author’s gaze prevails over the facts.
Able to transcend, if the film demands for it, the limits of the classic narrative.
The 8 films selected in MajorDocs will compete in a single official international section. The documentaries in competition will be eligible for two awards:
JURY AWARD:
Granted by the three members of the Majordocs international jury. It includes a cash prize of €1,500 that will be given at Majordocs closing ceremony.
AUDIENCE AWARD:
Voted by the festival’s viewers.
PITCH AWARD:
The best valued project will be awarded for distribution consultancies and festivals by renowned professionals in the sector.
