IMPROVISING HAS BECOME AN ETHICAL NECESSITY FOR ME
On the Adamant is an entirely improvised film. When filming started, I had no idea what the film would look like when it was finished, and that’s fine.
For me, the main thing is to have a solid starting point, like the promise that something will blossom. The writer Julien Green said: “I write my books to find out what’s in them.” I could adapt that line about my films. Sometimes, it is enough to be there, attentive to the surroundings, and to believe in it enough for this spot to become a place, these men and women the characters of a story, these seemingly insignificant actions authentic stories.
