MajorDocs, Mallorca’s documentary film festival, begins the countdown to its eighth edition, which will take place from November 10 to 14 in Palma. Among the first names confirmed for this edition is French filmmaker Jean-Gabriel Périot, guest of honor at MajorDocs 2026. During his time at the festival, Périot will give a masterclass titled “When Images Return,” an invitation to discover how the filmmaker works with archives, films and fragments of the past to make them speak again. His first feature, the documentary Une jeunesse allemande (A German Youth), will be the festival’s opening film. Having had its world premiere at the Berlinale, A German Youth went on to screen at festivals such as San Sebastián, Visions du Réel, Cinéma du Réel and BAFICI, where it earned numerous awards.
In it, the director invites us to West Germany in the 1960s to meet a generation rebelling against the world it has inherited. “Yesterday’s images challenge our present: how do we transform a world that seems to be closing itself off to change? Who decides which violence is legitimate? An opening for a MajorDocs in flames, where the desire for another future confronts its own contradictions,” say the organizers. The opening ceremony will also include a concert by the Mallorcan band Zulu Zulu, who will be in charge of “setting the rhythm for the end-of-the-world party.”
Indeed, “A World in Flames” is precisely the thematic axis of this year’s programme, made up of eight titles to be announced soon. In this regard, MajorDocs 2026’s guest thinker is Menorcan researcher Natalia Castro Picón, winner of the 2025 Anagrama Essay Prize for her book La fiesta del fin del mundo. Apocalipsis cultural en el periodo entre crisis (España, 2008-2023). Castro, a professor at Princeton University, will give a lecture in Palma as part of the festival.
As for the professional strand, MajorDocs Pro, after having explored areas such as editing, sound and cinematography, this year the focus is on distribution, an aspect as necessary as it is varied, with multiple applications and possibilities on both the creative and editorial sides.
