Eight documentaries to explore ‘A World on Fire’, MajorDocs 2026’s proposal

MajorDocs programme has been announced!

The official section of MajorDocs 2026 brings together eight documentaries from countries such as Iran, Brazil and Kyrgyzstan, as well as two feature films directed by Spanish filmmakers. Each film offers a unique journey: from the search for signs of life on Mars to the exploration of Bolivia’s oldest mine, including a portrait of Beirut’s collective psyche built from archive footage. From different approaches, all the works engage with this year’s theme, ‘A World on Fire’, and invite us to rethink the present from a global perspective, connected to other territories, cultures, eras and realities.

French filmmaker Jean-Gabriel Périot will be the festival’s guest of honour and will give a masterclass titled “When Images Return”. The guest thinker will be Natalia Castro-Picón, from Menorca, winner of the Anagrama Essay Prize. Meanwhile, the industry days, part of the MajorDocs PRO programme, will focus this year on distribution.

Festival director Miguel Eek highlighted that, for the first time, a theme has been chosen, a thematic axis running through the entire festival. “In the face of the feeling that the world is ending, we claim the party, not as a way of escaping but as a way of responding, as a form of resistance,” he explained. In this sense, this edition’s poster artwork also reflects the desire to “take the temperature” of the current situation. The filmmaker also emphasised the whole team’s determination to maintain the essence of the project – focusing on authors, creation and slowness – and to preserve it as an affordable experience for the public that can also contribute to social transformation.

  • The eight films in the official section engage, from highly diverse perspectives, with this edition’s theme: ‘A World on Fire’.
  • The programme includes a journey to Bolivia’s oldest mine and a search for signs of life on Mars, as well as portraits of ordinary citizens from Iran, Brazil and Kyrgyzstan, among other places.
  • The festival will also host the world premiere of eleven Balearic short films that address issues such as the search for a home, family relationships, mental health and the crisis of rural life.
  • Due to the call for a general strike, the screenings on 11 November are cancelled and the opening is moved forward by one day.
  • French filmmaker Jean-Gabriel Périot will be this edition’s guest of honour, while Natalia Castro-Picón, from Menorca, will take part as guest thinker.
  • The eighth edition of Mallorca’s documentary film festival will take place from 9 to 14 November in Palma.
  • Once again, the festival remains committed to bringing documentary film to all audiences through its pioneering EDUCA and COMUNITATS programmes.
  • The MajorDocs PRO industry days will focus on distribution.
